Understanding how you can mix your daily learnings into your design process

As a designer, you need to absorb your surroundings to create engaging and innovative experiences. When I first joined Foodics I traveled to Saudi Arabia for the first time, it was an amazing experience to co-create with my new team members. It was an amazing experience to get context into the Saudi culture and also visit many customers of our product.

The reason for my trip to Saudi was to co-create our Pay at Table experience and improve the Tipping to waiter feature to make it stand out in the market.

We wanted to expand our ecosystem to also allow table ordering, and support discounts, coupons, and promotions. We wanted to have a solution with no subscriptions or downloads on the process to be frictionless, our previous research had shown that in the MENA region, most people prefer to not install new apps for singular experiences. For the restaurant, our goal was to improve table turnover by 15 min per table, enhance customer service at the restaurant, and improve employee retention/satisfaction by increasing tips.

Tipping Dreams

An important insight that came from our qualitative research phase with interviews was how usually waiters use their tips. Most of them consider tips as ”super expected extra money” so since they can't have proper control over how much they will earn they use that money to plan and dream. Based on this insight which also came from my friend Sultan we decided to build this empathetic journey on tips for Pay at Table.

Huge success right away!

During the first 3 months we launched the feature in 90 restaurants, we noticed a growth of 225% in tip transactions in these partners, more money for the employees, more dreams fulfilled.

Tipping Mutasem's Dream!

A cool use case the we had during this 3 months was with Mutasem, he was a waiter in one of our beta group restaurants, his dream was to finish his studies as a Software Engineer, well...this is a pic of his first day as a Software Engineer Intern at Foodics
